Make sure your pet always knows where home is
Microchipping your pet is a great way to make sure that they can always find their way home. If your pet is lost, their chip can be scanned by any Vet and you will be contacted to let you know where your animal is.
It is a good idea to have your cat microchipped. Cats can roam quite far from home, and we’ve all heard stories of curious moggies becoming stowaways and travelling hundreds of miles! Microchipping your cat ensures that if they are ever lost or injured, they can be returned to you when found by someone else.
Mandatory Microchipping for Dogs
It is now law for all dog owners to have their dogs microchipped and to keep their contact details up to date with one of the registered pet databases, who together administer the microchipping scheme.
Breeders are responsible for microchipping puppies and they must be recorded as the first owner.
Puppies must be microchipped by 8 weeks old.
As well as microchipping, dogs must still wear an ID tag on a collar.
How does microchipping work?
The microchips used are about the size of a grain of rice. They can be fitted by a vet or a trained microchip implanter and they last a lifetime.
The procedure is simple, safe and quick. The microchip is inserted under your pet’s skin on the back of their neck causing little or no short term pain.
The surgery can assist you in either registering your pet’s new microchip or updating the current details.
What happens if my pet goes missing?
When your pet is found, an animal professional, usually a vet or dog warden, will scan the chip and be given a 15-digit code.
They can then call the database provider, who will conduct a security check before giving out your details as the pet owner.
You can then be contacted about your missing animal, and reunited with them.
